Our Vocation

Daughters of Charity follow Christ, serving the poor everywhere with humility, compassion, and unwavering dedication.

Called to Love: The Vincentian Vocation

Inspired by Love

“The call heard by the first Sisters is ever the same. Throughout the world it continues to raise up and assemble Daughters of Charity, who strive to rediscover at the source the inspiration and intuitions of their Founders, so that they may respond with ever-renewed fidelity and availability to the needs of their time.” (Constitutions of the Daughters of Charity)

As Daughters of Charity of the Province of North India, we are called to follow Jesus Christ, the Evangelizer of the Poor, inspired by the charism of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac. Living among the people rather than behind cloistered walls, we dedicate our lives to serving those who are poor, marginalized, and vulnerable with simplicity, humility, charity, and respect.

Whatever our ministry may be, we seek to uphold the dignity of every person, foster integral human development, and respond with creative fidelity to the emerging needs of our society.

For the Service of the Poor

Faithful to the vision of our Founders, we dedicate ourselves to serving people who experience poverty in its many forms—material, social, emotional, and spiritual.

Through education, healthcare, social services, pastoral ministry, women’s empowerment, child care, disaster response, and community development, we work alongside the poor to promote justice, hope, dignity, and holistic human development.

From the beginning, St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac sent the Daughters of Charity wherever the needs were greatest. This spirit of mobility, availability, and compassionate service continues to guide the mission of the Province of North India today.

Serving Every Poor Person

“You have a vocation which obliges you to help, without any discrimination, all sorts of persons—men, women, children, and, in general, every poor person who needs you.” (St. Vincent de Paul)

We welcome and serve every person with love and respect, without discrimination based on religion, caste, ethnicity, gender, or social background, recognizing the face of Christ in each individual.

Serving Everywhere

“You must be ready to serve those who are poor wherever you are sent: with the army, as you did when you were called there; with poor prisoners; and, generally speaking, wherever you can assist poor persons, since that is your purpose.” (St. Vincent de Paul)

Inspired by this call, we joyfully embrace our mission wherever we are sent. Whether in villages, towns, cities, schools, hospitals, social centres, or places affected by poverty and crisis, we remain committed to bringing Christ’s love through humble, compassionate, and selfless service.
