Our Foundress: St LOUISE de MARILLAC

St. Louise de Marillac and the Daughters of Charity

“Be diligent in serving the poor; love them with tenderness and humility.”

Born in France in 1591, St. Louise de Marillac devoted her life to God and to the service of those who were poor, sick, abandoned, and suffering. After the death of her husband, she found a new calling through her meeting with St. Vincent de Paul, who became her spiritual guide and companion in charity.

In 1633, Louise established a community of women dedicated to serving Christ in the poor—the beginning of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. With faith, humility, and courage, she helped establish communities serving in hospitals, schools, orphanages, and among those most in need.

St. Louise died peacefully in Paris on 15 March 1660. She was canonized in 1934 and proclaimed Patroness of Social Workers by Pope John XXIII in 1960. Her feast is celebrated on 9 May.

Her life continues to inspire us to serve with humble hearts, compassionate hands, and unwavering love.

Our FOUNDER: Saint Vincent de Paul

St. Vincent de Paul and the Revolution of Mercy

“Let us love the poor with tenderness and humility, seeing Christ in them.”

Born in France in 1581, St. Vincent de Paul dedicated his life to God and to those who were poor, sick, abandoned, and suffering. His deep compassion and unwavering faith inspired him to bring hope and dignity to those most in need.

Together with St. Louise de Marillac, he founded the Daughters of Charity, calling them to serve Christ in the person of the poor with humility, simplicity, and charity. Known as “The Apostle of Charity,” St. Vincent continues to inspire us to make God’s love visible through compassionate service.

He died peacefully in Paris on 27 September 1660, at the age of seventy-nine. His feast is celebrated on 27 September, and he is honored as the patron of charitable societies and works of charity throughout the world.

His mission lives on whenever we serve with love, humility, and joy.
